Fine Tree, Herbaceous and Itoh Hybrid Peonies

PAEONIA is a garden inspired by the tranquil aspects of the Far East and dedicated to the peony. Hidden behind a Japanese fence and gates, you will enjoy strolling the Buddha's Weeping Willow Allee and the paths between peony beds and other specialty plants. There is ample opportunity to see rare and unusual peonies unavailable in garden centers. Observing their growth habitats will aid your success in determining which type you can take home to enjoy and and grown in your own garden.

Set on two acres in the Sebastopol area of Sonoma County, the garden exhibits 1400 peonies of 120 varieties and is accented with Japanese maple, iris, dogwood and Japanese cedar.

Peony Growing
...
The question most posed regarding peonies is whether they will bloom in California. Where the temperatures get cold enough, these very long-lived plants can definitely produce a show each spring with a one variety of tree peony that is able to re-bloom in the autumn. Breeding attempts at the garden are underway to extend this quality to other cultivars.

PAEONIA will provide guidance on the best varieties for individual microclimates and the best growing methods to maximize blooming successes. Basically, peonies require full sun with afternoon shade in hot climates, a well-prepared planting site with compost, good drainage and most importantly, a planting depth with eyes at the surface of the ground for herbaceous and Itohs. Tree peonies should be planted with the graft 3-4 inches deep.

Care and Maintenance...
Moderate water is best. Fertilizer is applied after bloom and in July. Peonies should be placed in the frostiest part of the garden and if on a slope, using the construction of cold air wells or application of ice.

Pruning...
With herbaceous plants, what remains of the peony foliage may be cut to the ground in late November. If Itoh and Tree Peonies are not dormant by November, they must be forced into dormancy. Prune their stems back to the uppermost swollen bud for next year's bloom. With tree peonies, do not prune back hard wood unless it is dead. With all peonies, remove and discard all remaining leaves to avoid over-wintering fungal spores.
